Abstract
Surface enhanced laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS) is an important technique of proteomics. It can be prepared with diverse chemistries that have various degrees of protein-binding specificity and selectivity. This innovative technology has numerous advantages such as high throughput capability and high sensitivity for detecting proteins. It is directly applicable for clinical assay and has been successfully used in basic and clinical research of many diseases. But it is not used quite often in diabetes and its complications. In this review we discuss the application of SELDI-TOF-MS to the research of diabetes. SELDI- TOF-MS is a new approach to improve the prevention and treatment of diabetes and its complications. Key words: Proteomics; Surface enhanced laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry; Diabetes mellitus
