Abstract

AbstractWhereas current building codes legally apply to seismic design of tall buildings, their prescriptive provisions do not adequately address many critical aspects. Performance‐based engineering provides a desirable alternative. Application of performance‐based procedures requires: an understanding of the relation between performance and nonlinear modeling; selection and manipulation of ground motions appropriate to design hazard levels; selection of appropriate nonlinear models and analysis procedures; interpretation of results to determine design quantities based on nonlinear dynamic analysis procedures; careful attention to structural details; and peer review by independent qualified experts to help assure the building official that the proposed materials and system are acceptable. These topics are discussed with an emphasis on tall buildings. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
