Abstract

Before moving to Canada in 1991, Swiss-born Axel Morgenthaler worked as a lighting designer for Italian actor Massimo Rocchi, toured international festival circuits and worked as assistant painter for Sol LeWitt. Since his arrival in Montreal, Morgenthaler has established a reputation as one of Quebec’s leading innovators in visual and lighting design. His work has been seen across Canada, the United States and Europe, in production with companies including LaLaLa Human Steps, the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, Montreal’s O Vertigo Danse and with directors and choreographers such as Robert Lepage, Wajdi Mouawad, Alonso King, Jocelyne Montpetit, Marie Chouinard and Stephen Petronio. Work such as his design for the opera Kopernikus (produced by Autumn Leaf, Toronto, and the Banff Centre for the Arts in 2000) is resulting in growing recognition for him in the English-Canadian milieu.
