Abstract

In April 2004, a crowd of over 7,000 largely Christian Asian Americans, rallied in San Francisco against same-sex marriage. Less than a year later, several gay rights, including the Gay Asian Pacific Alliance, sponsored a marriage float in the S.F. Chinese New Year's Parade. In addition to the more public demonstrations, individual lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Asian Americans such as Mary Li have sued states to marry their partners. Indeed, Asian American presence and visibility in the same-sex marriage debate is crucial because of the community's long experience with governmental restrictions on sexuality and family, specifically through anti-miscegenation laws.
