Abstract

It has become difficult to discuss discipline in a matter-of-fact fashion. following a look at some generic features of discipline, the paper tracks the emergence, via military psychology, of an inability to acknowledge the ethical implications of military discipline. Some consequences of this cultural incapacity are evident in the recommendations of a recent Australian Senate report on Sexual harassment in the Australian Defence Forces, which precludes the possibility of commbating this problem by utilizing habits of mind and conduct fostered in traditional military culture.
