Abstract

Sedation for MRI I first heard about the Nurse led sedation for paediatric MRI (Paediatric Nursing 19, 2, 14-18) at the first annual paediatric sedation conference. This provided the impetus for development of our services at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, a district general hospital. When I took up post as an advanced nurse practitioner the failure rate for children attending for MRI under sedation was around 30 per cent. Following introduction of an evidence- based guideline for sedation using a single dose of chloral hydrate, the failure rate in children under five years/weighing less than 20 Kg plummeted to 3 per cent.
