Abstract

Abstract The North Pacific is generally regarded as the second most strategic region in the world after the North Atlantic. The United States and Canada are on the eastern rim, and the Soviet Union, Japan, the two Koreas, and China are on the western rim. This region encompasses a substantial economic infrastructure, which is highly dynamic and has global effect. In partial recognition of the geostrategic importance of the region, the United States and the Soviet Union have deployed the second largest concentration of their naval forces to the North Pacific. In addition, China has the third largest navy in the world with a significant strategic impact on the region. With the end of the cold war, a gradual reduction of superpower naval forces in the region is now in process, and a new balance of power will have to be struck.
