Abstract

Today, the world we live in is surrounded by the Internet of Things (IoT). Their popularity has further boosted the academic value and willingness to improve and introduce new concepts that help in the overall productivity of our lives. IoT is a network of connected devices (things) that act smartly and according to the situation of the present environment. The field has further introduced smart vehicular networks that are capable of performing tasks with no-to-minimum human interaction called the vehicular ad hoc network (VANET). Manual vehicular activities such as lack of attention or some failure at our end lead to loss of money and unfortunately result in accidents which may cause human lives and other mishaps which may occur on the road. The automobile companies are ready to invest big in VANET, which results in the growth of VANET across the globe. These automobile companies are ready to provide enhanced security services and improved driving experiences by using VANET and connected vehicles. However, with increased services and enhanced connectivity, VANET is also prone to attacks from various malicious attackers. This chapter discusses VANET in detail in today’s technological age based on IoT communication and the blooming 5G infrastructure that offers smart traffic management (smart traffic). With the growing technological advancement and evolution of 5G, VANET is an integral part of implementing smart traffic and intelligent transportation system. This chapter focuses on security and privacy issues in VANET. In this chapter, we present the security aspects of VANET attack types based on different attributes. We also present security attributes compromised in different security and privacy attacks and also recommend potential security mechanisms to counter these attacks. In particular, we provide a detailed and comprehensive study of security attacks and mechanisms about VANET.
