Abstract

Major application areas for superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) are disposable sanitary products that include sanitary napkins, and disposable diapers for children and adults. Of these sanitary products, SAPs were first used in sanitary napkins. Later, SAPs were adopted for disposable diapers for children and adults. Accordingly, the performance of sanitary products has been dramatically improved. At present, more than 90% of SAPs produced are considered to be used for sanitary products. The chapter discusses the history, current status, and recent trends and advances in the sanitary napkin domain. The development of new SAPs for sanitary napkin applications is also described in the chapter. Some important properties of future sanitary napkins are (1) improved leakage protection; (2) greater comfort and convenience; and (3) thinner and more compact size.
