Abstract

Normal individuals possessed serum antibodies to environmental food and bacterial antigens predominantly in the IgA1 subclass, while salivary antibodies were present in both IgA1 and IgA2 subclasses. Elderly individuals (>90 years) had similar levels of serum IgA1 antibodies, and substantially lower or undetectable levels of salivary IgA1 and IgA2 antibodies.
