Abstract

Measurements have been made of the total secondary electron yield and backscattering coefficient of samples of a zirconium-aluminium bulk getter, Type ST101, manufactured by SAES, Getters, Milan. The total yield at normal incidence after heating to activation temperature was found to have a maximum value of 0.8 at a primary energy of 500 eV. The getter behaved like a microscopically rough surface in that the yield did not vary appreciably with the angle of incidence of the primary electrons. Auger spectroscopy of the surface was carried out concurrently with the yield measurements; strong Zr and weak C and O peaks were found, but there was no sign of any Al peaks, indicating absence of Al from the surface layers.
