Abstract

Second-order nonlinear susceptibilities and refractive index dispersion measurements have been made in six benzene derivative crystals. The nonlinear susceptibility tends to be much greater in crystals with lower energy absorption edges. A simple classical model is discussed in which the enhanced values are due to anharmonic oscillators near the absorption edge.
