Abstract

Infection of intestinal parasites is still a health problem for Indonesian society. Intestinal infections are caused by a variety of factors. One of which is eating raw vegetables contaminated with intestinal parasites, such as intestinal worm eggs which is included in the Soil Transmitted Helminth (STH) and intestinal protozoan cysts. The purpose of this study was to identify intestinal worms and intestinal protozoa in lettuce (Lactuva sativa) obtained from traditional markets around West Jakarta. In this cross-sectional study, a purposive sampling was used to obtain the samples. A total of 35 lettuce samples was purchased from 7 traditional markets. A sedimetation technique was performed to inspect and analysed worm eggs and intestinal protozoa The results showed all sampels ( 25 out of 35 samples) were contaminated by eggs worm and intestinal protozoa, with STH egg contamination found in higher frequency compared to intestinal protozoa contamination. Ascaris lumbricoides egg is the most common intestinal worm egg found in all samples. This study may conclude that many lettuce obtained from traditional market around west Jakarta were contaminated with intestinal parasites.
