Abstract

The lobules of sebaceous follicles sometimes become so large as to result in prominent papules. This is not due to androgen stimulation, since this is not a phenomenon of puberty or early adulthood. Instead, these growths are found mainly on the photodamaged faces of the elderly. They may be confused with basal cell carcinomas or large, closed comedones. The variants of sebaceous gland hyperplasia are as follows: Circumscribed sebaceous gland hyperplasia Diffuse sebaceous gland hyperplasia Sebaceous gland hyperplasia in rosacea and rhinophyma Giant sebaceous gland hyperplasia Areolar sebaceous gland hyperplasia Fordyce granules or Fordyce spots
