Abstract
Previous investigations of various natural tracers and contaminants in the suspended matter and sediments of estuaries elucidated that sediments of marine origin are transported upstream the tidal river across the salt wedge [1,2]. Clay minerals, in particular, were used to trace the upstream transport of marine matter in the Elbe estuary [3,4]. Additional studies on water, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediments indicate that the distribution of particle bound pollutants in the Elbe estuary is predominantly influenced by the mixing of marine and fluvial sediments resulting in a seaward directed dilution. It could be shown that water discharge and, to a lesser extent, windstress situations typically affect the transfer of fine grained solids [5,6].
