Abstract

1. 1. Seasonal variations in plasma lipid levels were compared in British ( Bos taurus) and Zebu ( Bos indices crossbred) steers fed low and high quality diets in a tropical environment. 2. 2. Plasma cholesterol, phospholipid, triglyceride and total lipid levels were influenced by season but not by nutrition and were always higher ( P < 0·01) in Zebu than in British steers. 3. 3. Plasma non-esterified fatty acid and protein-bound iodine levels were influenced by nutrition but not by season. 4. 4. Serum protein levels were influenced by season and nutrition and were higher ( P < 0·01) in Zebu than in British steers. 5. 5. Plasma lipid, protein and protein-bound iodine levels varied independently.
