Abstract
1. Seasonal variations in plasma lipid levels were compared in British ( Bos taurus) and Zebu ( Bos indicus and Bos indicus × Bos taurus) steers grazing in a tropical environment. 2. Plasma cholesterol, phospholipid, triglyceride and total lipid levels in all animals were significantly influenced by season but were always higher ( P < 0.001) in Zebu than in British steers. 3. There were significant interactions between breed type (Zebu vs. British) and season for cholesterol, phospholipid, triglyceride and total lipid levels. 4. In fasting steers the plasma non-esterified fatty acid levels of Zebu animals were higher ( P < 0.01) than those of British animals.
