Abstract
ABSTRACT With the publication of The Letters of Seamus Heaney in 2023, 15 years after Stepping Stones, two book-length epistolary accounts of Heaney’s life and work from his perspective are available to readers. This article probes the preoccupations and motivations of a most prolific and thoughtful letter-writer and argues that Heaney’s letters provide important additional material to his poetic oeuvre as well as an illumination of his writerly concerns.
