Abstract

Situated at the heart of the Asia‐Pacific, the Philippines is a maritime nation with tremendous potential to be a major player in the region. Its geostrategic location allows for the country to be a premier logistics hub and a nexus for maritime cooperation in the region. As part of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), there is a need for the Philippines to assume a more assertive position in contributing to regional security and stability. Thus, the need for a strong navy with capabilities across the whole spectrum of operations becomes more apparent in order to address the rise of diverse security concerns. This article seeks to provide a general overview of the Mahanian sea power concept applied to the Philippine experience, and using Booth's concept of the trinity of naval roles, elucidate the Philippine Navy's diversifying roles in pursuit of national and regional security in light of the ASEAN's increasing role in international affairs.
