Abstract
HM nuclear submarine Sovereign has obtained the first synoptic measurements of the ice thickness distribution in Fram Strait, the main outflow from the Arctic Ocean. The ice nearest the ice edge is of quite different character from ice in the interior of the Strait, with a greater proportion of first-year ice and less pressure ridging. An estimate of the ice flux through Fram Strait can be made from the distribution of mean ice drafts.
