Abstract

The vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) has become a popular research topic, as vehicles present an indispensable transportation in our daily life. With vehicles' fast and random mobile features, VANETs always accompany with frequent changes in network topology. In order to support a highly dynamic vehicular environment, we propose an advanced handover approach where a software defined network (SDN) technology is employed. In the proposed approach, we utilize the advantages of SDN in the network control to manage the data transmission in VANETs in order to keep the transport layer's connection unchanged when a handover occurs, so that the upper layer could perform stably without the influence of network changes. To further discuss the benefits that our proposal brings about, we also conduct computer simulations from different aspects. The results show that the proposed protocol achieves a significant performance improvement when a handover happens as compared with the conventional approach.
