Abstract

ABSTRACT OPERATING difficulties have been experienced with plug-flow digesters when fed flushed dairy manure. The problem appears to be related to the increased scum accumulation with flushed in comparison to scraped dairy manure. Studies with two pilot scale plug-flow digesters fed flushed dairy manure indicated the problem was due to more than just variations in the two input solids concentrations. Results showed equal scum accumulation for influent solids concentrations of 7 to 9% TS (farm conditions) and 10 to 12% TS (design conditions). Furthermore, agitation was not considered to be a viable solution because the scum layer reformed after one day. Until the scum problem is solved, plug-flow digesters are not recommended for use with flushed dairy manure. s.
