Abstract

ABSTRACT Apilot scale 1 m^ plug flow digester was operated for 18 months to determine the rate of solids accumulation for fresh dairy manure at 9.0%, 12.4%, and 15.2% TS. Temperature was maintained at 351C, and a 15 d retention time was established. Greatest gas production (1.31 gas vol/digester vol/day) with minimal solids accumulation occurred with the 15.2% TS feedstock. Least gas production (0.60 gas vol/digester vol/day) and greatest solids accumulation occurred with the 9.0% TS feedstock. At this latter concentration solids accumulated at a rate of 0.3% digester volume per day. Approximately 85% of this accumulation occurred in the scum layer; the remaining 15% occurred in the sludge region. For fresh dairy manure a feedstock of between 13% and 15% TS appears most ideal.
