Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is an important health problem and is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Screening for T2DM is a controversial issue on which there has been much debate. Here we discuss some of the issues. To date no studies have found that the early treatment of screen-detected T2DM leads to better outcome. It is known, though, that T2DM can be prevented in those at risk through lifestyle and pharmacological intervention. Finding those at risk of T2DM or those with undiagnosed T2DM can be done by using risk scores that offer a cheap and simple way of assessing risk followed by a blood test. Screening for both T2DM and those at risk of future T2DM might be best integrated into a multiphasic screening program incorporating both T2DM and cardiovascular disease.
