Abstract
Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) remains the most common musculoskeletal disorder in newborns. Although screening for DDH has existed in the UK for over 50 years, controversy and lack of consensus nationally and worldwide, continues to surround how screening is best achieved. A literature review of DDH screening publications 1990–2022 was conducted. Online publications, textbooks and websites in English language, reporting on the evolution of DDH screening were considered for inclusion. A summary of the current UK national screening programme for DDH; its criteria and methods, is included in this review. An up-to-date summary of the most recent evidence, with advantages and disadvantages of different screening strategies, is also provided. DDH screening has been identified as a top research priority in Children's Orthopaedics. Ongoing work by the British Society for Children's Orthopaedic Surgery (BSCOS) is focusing on shaping the direction of future research to answer some of the biggest yet unanswered questions regarding screening and the best way this can be conducted in the UK.
