Abstract
Korean Nutrition Society (KNS) has started evaluation of Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans (KDRIs) and set strategies for the revision of KDRIs in 2010, since KDRIs were established in 2005. Opinions for revision were obtained from a wide range of professionals. Total 55 questionnaires out of those distributed to 120 active KNS‐work‐participating professionals were returned and analyzed. Among them, 60% recommended that functional indicators, nutrient requirements by life stages, tolerable upper intake level (UL), applications, and food guide should be reviewed in the revision processes. And 64% proposed maintaining committee system for the next revision while allocating special age group subcommittee among nutrient subcommittees. Respondents suggested that priority should be given to developing roadmap, fund raising, and organizing professional network and KDRIs can be applicable in the area of labeling, nutrition education, research, mass service and food policies. Currently 54 professionals were recruited and allocated to 8 revision subcommittees, which are energy and macronutrients, fat‐soluble vitamins, water‐soluble vitamins, major minerals, trace elements, reference heights and weights, infants and maternal nutrition, and UL. Works on systematic evidence‐based reviews were conducted and selections of new evidences for revision were discussed by the revision committee. For each subcommittee round‐table discussion proceeded three to five times so far. Four times of general meeting, two symposiums and one workshop were carried out. The review committee is composed of another 34 professionals. Revision of KDRIs will be open for public hearing in May 2010 and officially released at the end of October 2010.
