Abstract

This paper outlines why the scientist-practitioner tradition within counselling psychology is very applicable to our work as counselling psychologists in the 21st century, and why the scientist-practitioner model is not only applicable in the US but also within the Commonwealth. The importance of the scientist-practitioner model will be outlined in a twofold fashion. First, how counselling psychologists’ applied work necessitates that the scientist portion of counselling psychology training continues will be outlined. This discussion includes a brief overview of process and outcome research. Second, paralleling a theme of research-practice integration, the integration of seemingly divergent research methods to be utilized within the field of counselling psychology will be proposed.
