Abstract

Like all science, ecology depends upon an observational and experimental base. This is ‘scientific natural history’: it is a tradition particularly strong in Britain, where it is nurtured and stimulated in local and national natural history societies. Ecology in Britain sprang directly from natural history, in contrast to its origins in other countries from physiology. It is argued that a healthy ecology depends on a nourishing knowledge of field biology.
