Abstract
While the Polish scientific language has been shaping since the 16th century, the study of the so-called academic language in Polish language glottodidactics only began in the last decade, albeit its origins can be traced back to works on the didactics of foreign languages for professional and specialist purposes. Academic language emerges at the intersection of general Polish and its scientific communicative-stylistic variety as its specific thematic and situational variant. It should be subdivided into the thematic variant (the so-called academic variety of language) and the situational variant (the so-called language for academic purposes). For foreigners to master it is a three-stage and long-term process. The aim of teaching Polish academic language as a foreign language is to prepare learners to consciously function in the life of academic communiries and to partake in the tasks of the humanities and other disciplines of science.
