Abstract

In 2004, Tohoku University started a new introductory experimental science course for freshmen. This course was intended to aid students in thinking logically and in understanding the fundamental concepts of natural phenomena. We combined physics, chemistry, biology, and earth sciences and set up a five themes entitled, “Life, Energy, Earth and Environment, Materials, and Science and Culture” . More than 1,800 students, including 810 engineering students, of all the science-related subjects attended these classes. Of the students taking the classes, 62% were favorable to them in 2004 and 68% in 2007, whilst only 50% of the students were positive about the old course in 2003.
