Abstract

A Renaissance painting from Urbino reveals the ideal city. The famous View of an Ideal City has left Urbino for a exhibition in Palazzo Strozzi, Florence. In this issue Martin Kemp reflects on how the delicate balance between individual freedom and responsibilities was successfully struck in Renaissance Italy. Today's town planners rarely achieve the harmony of ancient planned cities such as Urbino and Pienza: perhaps they should look and learn.
