Abstract

Western civilization is now heavily dependent on science-based industry, which can be sustained only by an adequate flow of appropriately trained scientists and a proper understanding of science and its objectives among the population at large. This article—based on a round-table discussion in Luxembourg in April 1979, sponsored by the Commission of the European Communities—reviews the principles and practice of science teaching in secondary schools within the Community and differing attitudes to the scope of the subject.
