Abstract

Click to increase image sizeClick to decrease image size A high proportion of housing in the new German Länder is situated in prefabricated housing areas built during the 1960s to the 1980s. Despite great financial, planning and other support efforts by the Federation, the Länder and the communities, these areas are currently faced with a number of serious problems creating considerable housing vacancies. The reasons for these problems are only partly explained by the deficits of the housing areas themselves, but also relate to general demographic, economic and structural changes in former East Germany. Furthermore, prefabricated housing areas have turned out to be particularly sensitive to general structural changes in the urban regions. In order to achieve medium and long term sustainable reconstruction integrated concepts are needed, considering economic and overall aspects of urban fabric. In this context, specific focus should clearly be on the needs of the large housing estates.
