Abstract
We establish an analogue of Schreier's formula for subalgebras of free Lie algebras in terms of formal power series. Similar formulas are also true for free Lie p-algebras and superalgebras. As an application of that formula we compute the Hilbert-Poincare series for some finitely generated solvable Lie algebras and groups.
