Abstract

Environmental education should be a catalyst for simultaneous improvement of both the educational and community environment Founded on this premise, the Global Rivers Environmental Education Network (GREEN), an international, non-governmental organization, focuses on community-bas ed watershed education and networking. Principles and components of GREEN guide developing local projects as students and teachers shape learning in response to community needs, student decision making and student action taking. Two case studies from the US illustrate the environmental health benefits accruing from such action-oriented education.
