Abstract

This appraises a new strategy of rural development being tried in Nigeria, it is aimed at mobilising school leavers into becoming farmers and bringing them in as serious multipliers of the country's agricultural development effort. In drawing from the experiences of the Rivers State (where it all began) and Oyo State (a recent convert), the paper examines the planning dimensions, comparative conditions, and the contents of the new strategy. Despite laudable objectives, the achievements remain limited; the lack of follow-up support from programme sponsors is a major cause of frustration.
