Abstract

Summary In populations of the pteropods Clio pyramidata and Clio polita occasional specimens occur with a body form quite unlike that of the normal ones (Van der Spoel, S., Euthecosomata, 1967, p. 375; Bijd. Dierk., 43 (1973) 202–215; Mala- cologia, 18 (1979) 27–30). Formed under disadvantageous conditions by a process of schizogamy they represent self-fertilizing specimens of the—under normal circumstances—cross-fertilizing Clio. The behaviour of the self-fertilizing body recalls that of polychaete stolons (Schroeder, P.C. and Hermans, CO., Reproduction of Marine Invertebrates, vol. Ill, Academic Press, New York, 1975, pp. 1–169).
