Abstract
A new halo-substituted Schiff base ligand 2-bromo-6-[(2-ethylaminoethylimino)methyl]phenol (HL) and its copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes [Cu2L2(μ1,1-NCS)2] (1) and [ZnCl2(HL)] (2) (HL is the zwitterionic form of the Schiff base ligand) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, and single-crystal X-ray crystallographic determination. The crystal of (1) is monoclinic: space group P21/c, a = 10.909(1), b = 13.976(1), c = 10.161(1) Å, β = 111.471(2)°, V = 1441.7(2) Å3, Z = 2. The crystal of (2) is monoclinic: space group P21/n, a = 7.2682(4), b = 20.195(1), c = 10.8447(6) Å, β = 106.420(2)°, V = 1526.9(2) Å3, Z = 4. The Cu atoms in the copper complex are in square pyramidal coordination. The Zn atom in the zinc complex is in tetrahedral coordination. The effect of the complexes on the antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans were studied.
