Abstract

1. 1. The antihypertensive drug carvedilol and the antiinflammatory selenoorganic compound ebselen were tested for their ability to react with the reactive oxygen species hypochlorous acid (HOCI) in vitro. 2. 2. Carvedilol scavenges HOCI at a rate sufficient to protect a model molecule catalase against inactivation by HOCI. 3. 3. Ebselen was resistant to HOCI when its glutathione-peroxidase mimetic property was compared with that of glutathione peroxidase.
