Abstract
We discuss here the solutions of two‐dimensional problems of scattering of low‐frequency E‐polarized or H‐polarized electromagnetic plane waves by an arbitrary infinite dielectric cylinder of symmetrical shape embedded in an infinite dielectric medium of different properties. Solutions are obtained both inside the guest and host media, when the wavelengths in the two media are large compared with the characteristic length of the embedded cylinder. These integral equations are recast into an infinite number of algebraic equations which are suitably truncated to yield the interior solutions. The exterior solutions are readily obtained by substituting the interior solutions in the governing integral equations. Approximate expressions for the internal and external electric and magnetic fields, the far‐field amplitude and scattering cross‐section of the arbitrary embedded cylinder are derived in terms of its shape factors in each case. Finally, we present these approximate expressions, when the configurations ...
