Abstract

The scattering of a Gaussian beam by an inhomogeneous dielectric cylinder is analyzed. An expression, which is represented as a product of the well-known scattering of a plane wave by an inhomogeneous dielectric cylinder and a weighting function, is obtained by using a new method. The amplitudes of the beam near the cylinder are described in detail. A comparison of the focal lengths obtained by this theory and ray optics is made. Variations in the phase of the beam near the focal point are described. The scattering patterns are also presented.
