Abstract

Haller's organs of eight of nine known species of the subgenus Sternalixodes of the genus Ixodes were studied with scanning electron microscopy. The morphology of the organ is remarkably uniform throughout the subgenus. The major differences are in the prominence of the tarsal hump and the steepness of the tarsal hump walls. Comparisons are made with a similar study done previously on the subgenus Multidentatus . Results of this study support the validity of the subgenus Sternalixodes .
