Abstract
Recent deployments of 1⨉N wavelength selective switches (WSSs) in carrier’s core optical networks have signaled the maturity of both micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) and liquid crystal (LC) technology for optical switching. The strong demand for colorless directionless reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexing (ROADM) has helped system architects to reconsider the applications of large-scale MEMS-based optical switches in their networks. In this paper, we review the demand for optical switching technology. It becomes highly desirable to scale current optical switches to more than 1000x1000 ports to meet the demand for a large-scale switch. We also discuss the current status of optical switches and the way to scale the current optical switch to >100Tb/s capacity, which can support 1000 ports and 100Gbit/s channel rate. We believe MEMS-based large optical switch will be critical in scaling optical switch to 100 Tb/s capacity.
