Abstract

This article discusses the history and possible reasons for the extended production of scaleboard bindings in America. Using an example of a scaleboard binding in the Baldwin Children's Library, this article also concludes with the possible ties between the colonial capitalist market and the burgeoning fervor of American patriotism. A discussion of how conservators repair and maintain these fragile books for present and future study is also articulated.
