Abstract

A method is presented by which 3 n−9 scalar variables can be selected in a systematic way for the complete kinematical description of processes with n participating particles ( n external lines) of non-vanishing mass. One relation between these variables exists and limits them to 3 n−10 independent scalar variables appropriate to the number of degrees of freedom. For n = 4 they are equivalent to the Mandelstam variables s, t and u. The additional information required to determine the momenta on the basis of the scalar variables and the masses is also specified.
