Abstract

In the last years, a speed-up in the digitalization process in the education field was needed as most schools and universities around the world moved towards using online resources to enhance the learning process. The educational institutes needed to provide the students the necessary resources and functionalities to facilitate their studies and collaboration.Based on Learning Management Systems’ (such as Moodle's) features and decision-making elements, the students’ learning process can be tailored to their individual needs. Moreover, their modular construction may allow automatic load balancing mechanisms when the given resources are not enough.Nevertheless, the digitalization process brings challenges in administrating a learning management system. When the number of users increases, the network traffic generated to the e-learning platform is higher and the concurrent accesses to an online platform can lead to technical limitations. This paper proposes a modular fault-tolerant distributed Moodle infrastructure that can be scaled horizontally and can manage a larger number of requests than the classical architecture.
