Abstract

Mortars modified with styrene-butadiene latex (SBR) and Ordinary Portland cement (OPC), Pozzolonic Pozzolanic Portland cement (PPC) and White Portland cement (WPC) are universally accepted for concrete surface preservations. However, mortar still has application and performance limitations. To overcome this, cementitious composite coatings with various cements and cement at diverse polymer to cement ratios were prepared and evaluated. The experimental results validate that the type of cement influences the performance properties of cementitious coatings. A continuous monolithic polymer cement co-matrix film was applied to achieve better water resistance and adhesion strength. The optimum P/C ratio to achieve better water resistance of PPC, OPC and WPC has found 0.2, 0.2 and 0.4, respectively. In addition, the free cementitious coating polymer film formed by blending latex and cement; WPC-based coating has 10% and 28% highest (5.2 Mpa) tensile strength than OPC and PPC. However, 399% higher slant shear strength than without polymer and confirmed by dynamic mechanical analyses. A SEM analysis confirms an enveloping phenomenon of polymer over cement grains at higher dosages results.
