Abstract

This paper aims at determining the factors of influence on the frequency noise of surface acoustic wave (SAW) oscillators in gas sensor applications. Frequency discriminant devices are SAW two part resonators and SAW delay lines provided with a gas sensitive coating. The frequency noise determines a lower limit for the mass resolution and thus the noise equivalent gas concentration (NEC) of the sensor. The model used is the single sideband phase noise of the oscillator considering the influence of the coating on the attenuation and group delay of the SAW device. From this the saw device best suited for a given application is ascertained.
