Abstract

The Southwest Ocean Outfall Project is an element of the Master Wastewater Plan of the City and County of San Francisco. When the plan is completed during the 1980's, it will collect, treat and dispose of both dry weather (sanitary) and wet weather (storm) flows. The ultimate element of the system is the South-west Ocean Outfall which has as its objective all flows transported to it, and conveying them to disposal and dispersion at a distance of from 3.2 to 8.0 km out into the Pacific Ocean, west of the San Francisco Peninsula. Design of the outfall system includes: extensive ocean and offshore field investigations; engineering evaluations; alternatives for constructing the outfall through the oftentimes violent surf; development of structural design criteria which will be used for that portion of the outfall structure which directly crosses the San Andreas Fault; evaluation of marine equipment and techniques which are feasible for constructing outfall structures; and the preparation of tender documents for construction of the Outfall Project.
