Abstract

Due to its relevance in controller design, we consider the problem of determining whether and if so to which extent an input-output system is passive. In practice, the input-output relationship is often undisclosed while only input-output data from simulations or experiments are available. Hence, we present a sampling approach for discrete-time linear time-invariant systems to iteratively determine its input feedforward passivity index and the shortage of passivity, respectively. As a constructive procedure to find the optimum input-output samples corresponding to the respective property, we employ dynamical systems resulting in ordinary differential equations, whose convergence properties are then investigated.
